Even though my last learning experience with Roberta was a few years ago, I still hear her voice while painting, imparting the knowledge that she so freely gives to her students. Her workshops are a blast and I highly recommend her classes. Thanks, Roberta, for giving me the confidence and tools to succeed on my painting journey.

It's a joy to take a workshop with Roberta Remy. She gives an excellent grounding on all the aspects of painting and design and color. Roberta makes you see the light. She is considerate and gives freely of her knowledge. I learned more from Roberta than anyone I have ever worked with.

In June of '06 I was privileged to attend one of Roberta Remy's workshops. A real eye opening class with some excellent information on painting the figure. Her use of colors and lectures were outstanding and I would certainly recommend her to everyone who paints. She worked with every student and never left them, also answered all their questions. To sum it all up - It was the best workshop I ever had.

After three workshops with Roberta Remy, I can only state:
"Studying with Roberta, getting to know her, was an incredible experience. Her instruction is golden-- opening up the world of still life painting. Her goal is for the student to comprehend the methods, and succeed in execution. With Roberta...the magic is revealed."

Having Roberta Remy teach her chiaroscuro still life oil painting workshop at Skylight Farm is always a professional and profound experience for me and for the many students she impresses with her skills and painting wisdom. She exudes enough rich, informative knowledge for a lifetime. Trained and well versed in the language of painting, she is a true master.

Roberta's teaching is grounded in complete mastery of her technique, and she is prepared with comprehensive lectures and illustrations. She spends lots of time with each student and has infinite patience with "stupid" questions-- but she is not afraid to give that feedback which is essential for seeing where one has gone wrong. She understands and remembers each student's difficulties the way a good psychologist knows the issues of her clients, and she keeps addressing them in the same patient and focused way

“I had the good fortune to have been able to study at the Art Students League in New York with many great and generous instructors. And I try to carry on that tradition in my own teaching by striving to always increase my students’ understanding and awareness of the importance of the basics, the principles, and the craft; because with these tools they can continue independently to hone their skill, deepen their understanding and find their own voice. When I teach my students now, in the spirit of my great teachers, I try to follow the tradition and "pass it on".
Teaching Statement
The topics I cover are the basic principles that create and orchestrate a successful painting:
| |
Learning to See: |
 |
Light and Shade (Chiaroscuro) - how the light reveals the form, creates atmosphere, the strength and mysterious quality of shadow, the subtlety of planes revealed by light, half-tone, shadow. |
 |
Values - how to use them to represent the principles of light and shade, how they make form, how they translate to color. |
 |
Color - understanding the meaning of warm and cool color relationships, knowing how and when to control the degree of color intensity/chroma. |
 |
Composition/Design - how to set up a still life, how to look at the positive shapes of the subject and the negative spaces around them, using these elements for the most dynamic design. |
 |
Edges - lost and found edges, how powerfully edges can direct the eye |
 |
Paint quality/technique - Where should the paint be transparent? Where should the paint be opaque? All the relationships to the aesthetic consideration of the surface. |
 |
Painting the figure - combining all the principles and keeping the action of the figure in the painting. |
 |
Portraiture - "Getting the likeness", attention to hair, drapery, costume, hands, the portrait setting. |
 |
Still life - Setting up and designing a still life. |
 |
Materials & Techniques - grounds and how to prepare them, brushes, paints, mediums, varnishes. |
The entire painting process is covered, from the application of the medium, to achieving clean color, good value relationships, balanced compositions, even and very importantly, "how to hold the brush".
I encourage students to bring their portfolios or work for me to review, so that I can direct them in how to implement what they have learned in their future work. I believe in demonstrations; lots of student painting time; individual attention is emphasized. Each student receives personal instruction at their easel and is guided at their own level and style.

The
reasons I so enjoyed your classes were because you were
so organized in your approach to painting portraits so
I was able to come away with a method that I have been
able to use ever since. Your inspiration has kept me
going and I am still painting on an almost daily basis.
You helped me take my first steps and now I'm walking
on my own. --Warwick Peacock, CA |
